French writer, Alexis de Tocqueville, after visiting America in 1831, said, “I sought for the greatness of the United States in her commodious harbors, her ample rivers, her fertile fields, and boundless forest—and it was not there. I sought for it in her rich mines, her vast world commerce, her public school system, and in her institutions of higher learning—and it was not there. I looked for it in her democratic Congress and her matchless Constitution—and it was not there. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the source of her genius and power. America is great because America is good, and if America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great!”
Is America still great? Is America still good? Is America as good as it was when you and I were children?
The goodness of America has ebbed away, and we, as Christians, have been asleep at the wheel.
In 1963, when I was in third grade, Madalyn Murray O-Hair and her lawyer successfully got the Supreme Court to ban prayer in public schools. Today, in a lot of places, prayer is banned at sporting events, graduations, and other school sponsored events.
You will also recall that in a lot of places the Ten Commandments cannot be displayed at courthouses and other public places.
In many courts, witnesses are still given a choice to place their hands on a Bible while swearing to tell the truth, but in a lot of places “so help me God” has been removed.
There have been debates about removing “one nation under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance. Others have tried to remove “In God we trust” from our money.
Is America good? Do we still honor and serve God?
In January 1973, Roe vs. Wade brought about legal abortion. Since then, well over 54 million babies have been aborted. Murdered, and it is legal.
While I do believe it is important to have a God-fearing man in the White House, our goodness it not dependent on that. It is dependent on We, The People.
We, The People, who are called by God’s name need to cry out to Him, and We, The People, need to repent, and We, The People, need to turn from our wicked ways, so that OUR GOD will come and heal our land.
We, The People, need to get off our blessed assurances, and get down on our knees, and pray. Pray whole-heartedly. We need to stand in the gap and repent. Repent for those who don’t know that they need to repent.
We need to repent for the sins of our land. We need to repent for our family members who are not walking with God.
We need to ask for forgiveness where we did not pay attention and were asleep at the wheel. We need to be alert and vigilant on our watch.
We need to keep our spiritual eyes and ears open so that We, The People, can hear what God is saying. We, The People, need to fast and pray for our nation.
We need to pray for our President so that he will have the ears to hear what God is saying and that he will be wise and strong. We need to pray for our President and his family and those others who are fighting for us so that they will be protected and able to withstand the onslaught of the enemy.
We need to pray for God to be able to use our President to be His battering ram against evil.
We need to pray that those who are lost and are serving the enemy will have their eyes opened to The Truth and for their ears to be open to hear the Word of God.
Is America good? I would say that answer depends on you and me. We have to stand ground firm. We have to be in tune with God.
We have to fight the good fight. We have to armor up each and every morning. We have to been willing to enter the battle and fight. We cannot let the enemy back us into a corner. We cannot sit in that corner and cry “poor, poor me.”
The God of the Universe resides in you. He lives in you. He has given you the authority to trample on serpents, and it is high time that we did just that!
There is this saying that those who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world usually do. Well, I am asking you, “Are you crazy enough to think that you can change the world?”
How, you ask? By crying out to God in prayer. By crying out to God in worship. By crying out to God in praise.
Now, here is the hard one. By crying out to God in action.
We need to pray boiling hot prayers, and we need to take appropriate action to share the love of Christ with those who are hurting and lost. We need to get involved in our neighborhood and help those who are in need.
I ask you again, “Is America good? And, what are you doing to see that things change for the better around you? What are you doing to help others around the nation, and even the world?”
Ezekiel 22:30, “So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one.”
May you and I be set on fire to help change the atmosphere of America. Maybe, you and I can make a difference, one person at a time, one block at a time, one neighborhood at a time, and one city at a time.
